Respiratory allergies are suffered by many as a result of different elements being inhaled from the air. Though they are not always serious in nature, they can complicate daily activities and alter your mood. At our allergy clinic in Barcelona we treat all types of respiratory allergy and their symptoms to optimize patients’ functional states and completely restore health.

Sneezing, congestion, frequent colds…am I allergic to something?

The nasal and ocular symptoms produced by respiratory allergy are characterized by their persistence for the duration of exposure to the allergen. But what difference is there between allergy and a cold? Respiratory allergy produces sneezing and nasal and eye irritation that can be accompanied by a cough. In many cases, this is due to exposure to allergens such as mites, pollen, animal skin cells, and mold. By contrast, colds are usually caused by a virus. While during the first hours of onset it can be difficult to distinguish between them, given that colds are infectious processes accompanied by myalgia and fever, it’s important to see a doctor for a diagnosis.

I cough and use inhalers. Do I have asthma?

Often a persistent cough and the use of inhalers can be confused with the symptoms of asthma. And they are related, to a certain degree. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract and is characterized by the reverse obstruction of the flow of air from the lungs. The complex inflammatory/immunological mechanisms that produce asthma are primarily triggered by allergies to inhaled particles in the air and, rarely, by food, medications, exercise, stress, etc. Often asthmatic patients have an intermittent spasmodic cough, and this will appear suddenly, for example, after cleaning out a closet or on a day when there is a lot of pollen in the air. Inhalers reduce inflammation and significantly improve patients’ symptoms.
